🍲 Ingredients
Avocado Oil – For this recipe, I used Chosen Foods 100% Pure Avocado Oil to caramelize the onions. Their avocado oil contains good fats from avocados and it has a neutral flavor so it doesn’t overpower the onion. It’s also fantastic for high-heat cooking and is a healthy swap for most recipes that call for oil.
Greek Yogurt – In this Homemade French Onion Dip I used Greek yogurt to help with the creaminess. Greek yogurt is such a healthy alternative to using sour cream or mayo in recipes. It also adds an extra protein boost.
👩🍳 How to Make Homemade French Onion Dip
- Slice onions very thinly (this can also be done on a mandolin if you desire).
- Heat a medium-sized pot or high-sided skillet over medium heat. Add the avocado oil and once warm turn to medium-low and add the onions, sprinkle with salt and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally until the onions are caramelized and golden, this can take about 30 minutes.
- Pre heat the oven to 375F. To make the crispy baguette, using a bread knife, slice the baguette into 1-inch thick slices. Brush the baguette slices with olive oil on one side and place in a single layer on a baking sheet. Toast for 10 minutes total, flipping halfway through. Set aside.
- Transfer caramelized onions to a cutting board and chop coarsely into smaller pieces.
- Stir together softened goat cheese and yogurt. Mix in chopped caramelized onions, fresh chives, garlic powder, salt, pepper and worcestershire sauce.
- Serve with toasted baguette!

🗒 Tips and Tricks
- Caramelizing Onions: Remember, caramelizing onions takes time so keep the heat on medium-low the entire cooking time. Low and slow is key! The natural sugars in the onions will caramelize, providing the dip’s signature sweetness. There’s often no need to add extra sugar, but a pinch can enhance the process.
- Serving: Try this dip as a spread on sandwiches, burgers, or bagels too! Would also be delicious served with crackers, pita, pretzels, or fresh vegetables.
- Seasoning: Don’t be afraid to season your dip. Salt and pepper are essential. Consider adding a touch of garlic powder, onion powder, or Worcestershire sauce for extra depth of flavor. Fresh herbs like chives or parsley add a nice fresh component.

👝 How to Store Leftovers
This dip gets better with time as it has a chance to marinate all the flavors together. Cover it and place it in the fridge. Store for up to 3 days.
🤔 Common Questions
Absolutely! In fact, it can be even more flavorful when you make it ahead and let it sit in the fridge.
Yellow or sweet onions are ideal. They caramelize well and offer a balanced sweetness.
While there are quicker methods, they won’t yield the same deep, sweet flavor. Slow and low is best.
