Forget plain butter! This savory green 🌱 onion butter 🧈 adds instant flavor magic to everything it touches. Ready in 15 minutes and freezer-friendly. Life's too short for boring butter!

Compound butter is a mix of butter and supplementary ingredients. It is used to enhance flavor in various dishes, similar to a sauce. The best part is that you can purchase it at your local grocery store, or you can easily make it at home. This Green Onion Butter is one of my recent favs, but I’ve also made so many variations of compound butter for you to try here.

❤️ Why You’ll Love This Green Onion Butter

  • Easy: This herb butter recipe takes just 15 minutes, and you’ll have deliciously flavored butter to spread on anything.
  • Versatile: You can make so many versions of compound butter. Try different herbs, spices, etc.
  • Eat it on Anything: No seriously, spread it on toast, make “garlic bread” with it, add it to pasta, or use it in any recipe that calls for butter.

🍲 Ingredients

Butter – I prefer to use unsalted butter because I don’t think salted butter is necessary; however, you can use either. Butter is rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, and provides the perfect creamy base to carry the flavors of the green onions throughout any dish.

Green Onion – Did you know green onions can help reduce inflammation and boost your immunity? They are actually good for you and easy to add to a salad or recipe. Green onions add a mild onion flavor with a fresh, bright finish that works beautifully in compound butter.

👩‍🍳 How to Make This Green Onion Butter

  1. Clean and remove the ends of the green onion sprigs, and set aside.
  2. Place a pan over medium-high heat and add the prepared green onion.
  3. Cook until the green onion is roasted on all sides. About 5 – 10 minutes.
  4. Remove the green onions from heat and allow to cool on a cutting board.
  5. Once cooled, finely chop the green onion and add to a medium-sized bowl.
  6. Add the softened butter and spices, and mix well until combined.
  7. Transfer the butter onto a sheet of parchment paper and roll into a log.
  8. Freeze or refrigerate until ready to use! This is the perfect thing to add and spice up any dish!

🗒 Tips and Tricks

  • Temperature: Make sure your butter is properly softened at room temperature for easier mixing.
  • Roasting: Don’t skip the roasting step – it brings out a deeper, sweeter flavor in the green onions.
  • Shaping: Use parchment paper or plastic wrap to create a tight log, making it easier to slice later.
  • Portioning: Slice into discs before freezing for convenient single servings.

🤔 Common Questions

What can I use green onion butter on?

Use this herb butter for pasta, toast, popcorn, or just anything! It’s especially delicious on grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or melted into mashed potatoes.

Can I use regular onions instead of green onions?

While you can use regular onions, green onions have a milder flavor and won’t overpower the butter. If using regular onions, try caramelizing them first for an incredible flavor.

How can I quickly soften butter for this recipe?

Cut the butter into small cubes and let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes. Avoid microwaving, as it can cause uneven melting.

Can I add other herbs to my green onion butter?

Absolutely! Parsley, chives, cilantro, or dill would all work beautifully with green onions in this compound butter.

Do I have to roast the green onions?

While roasting enhances the flavor, you can use raw green onions for a brighter, sharper taste if preferred.
