This delicious charred green onion herb butter is delicious. You'll want to spread it or mix it into everything!
Compound butter is a mix of butter and supplementary ingredients. They are used to enhance flavor in various dishes, similar to a sauce. The best part about them is that they can be purchased in your local grocery store, but also you can easily make them at home too. This herb butter is one of my recent favs but I’ve also made so many variations of compound butter for you to try here.

- Eat it On Anything: No seriously, spread it on toast, make “garlic bread” with it, add it to pasta, or use it in any recipe that calls for “butter”, the options are endless
Ingredient Notes:
Butter: I like to use unsalted butter because I don’t feel salted butter is necessary, however, you could really use either or. You can even swap butter for plant-based butter if you wanted.
Green Onion: Did you know green onions can help reduce inflammation and boost your immunity? They are actually so good for you and so easy to throw into a salad or recipe.
How to make herb butter:
- Clean and remove the ends of the green onion sprigs, and set aside.
- Place a pan over medium-high heat and add the prepared green onion.
- Cook until the green onion is roasted on all sides. About 5 – 10 minutes.
- Remove the green onions from heat and allow to cool on a cutting board.
- Once cooled, finely chop the green onion and add to a medium-sized bowl.
- Add the softened butter and spices, and mix well until combined.
- Transfer the butter onto a sheet of parchment paper and roll into a log.
- Freeze or refrigerate until ready to use! This is the perfect thing to add and spice up any dish!

Get Creative: You can roast or char different items of your choice to add to the butter- like olives, garlic, veggies, or herbs. You can use vegan butter for this recipe also!
