My Go-To Plant-Based, Dairy Free Summer Treat

The summer is in full swing and I’ve been loving all the Vitamin D and beautiful weather we’ve been having. As Canadians, we totally live for the summer, as we only get spoiled with it for a few months each year. What I also love about the summer, is all the refreshing and delicious foods that pair so well with the hot summer weather and BBQ season, including yummy frozen treats like ice cream bars.

Like always, it’s very important to me to stick to my vegan/plant-based diet even when the hot dogs and hamburgers are on the grill. Even when it comes to tasty cool desserts like ice cream, I still want to make sure it’s plant based and fits my dietary requirements. That’s why when I discovered Daiya’s Dessert Bars, which are dairy free and plant-based, I got so excited. Finally I could have a plant-based ice cream treat that was made for me and my preferences.

About plant-based food company, Daiya

Daiya is a leading plant-based brand committed to delighting your senses with it’s line of delicious, better-for-you comfort foods. Not only do they have these delicious dessert bars, but also fan favs like pizza and burritos. Daiya’s products put a pep in my step because it makes plant-based comfort foods easy for me, and when I want to treat myself, it doesn’t have to be a challenge to find plant-based options.

Daiya is an industry leader and actually one of the founding members of The Plant Based Foods Association. They’re passionate about celebrating food that is free from dairy, gluten and soy, and of course, you know my dietary values are very much in line with that too! Another product I love of theirs is their great selection of dairy-free cheezes.

You can find Daiya products at grocery stores across Canada and the United States, and they have a great directory here to find the closest location with their products here.

About Daiya’s Dairy Free Ice Cream Bars

Okay, no let’s talk about these amazing dessert bars that Daiya makes. They come in four flavours that are delicious:

  • Chocolate Fudge Crunch
  • Classic Vanilla Bean
  • Salted Caramel Swirl
  • Espresso Coffee

These frozen dessert bars are made with premium ingredients including semisweet chocolate, fair trade dark chocolate, real vanilla extract and 100% Arabica coffee. The bars are a crowd pleaser from everyone to the kids in your family, to those with complex dietary restrictions and allergies that often hold them back from enjoying treats like ice cream bars.

Lactose intolerance, for example, is incredibly widespread and approximately 65% of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy. People with a lactose intolerance will experience uncomfortable digestion such as bloating, diarrhea, and gas, and take it from me, it’s not enjoyable. So these bars being dairy free makes this girl super happy!

Within my plant-based diet, I obviously am dependent on dairy free milk options, which have so many benefits for your health even if you’re not allergic to lactose. Dairy free options like soy milk, almond milk and coconut milk can offer benefits such as:

  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Low in fat (usually – dependent on the type)
  • Don’t contain cholesterol
  • Have a healthy combination of mono- and polyunsaturated fats

Of course, a huge benefit is that it’s cruelty free. You don’t need me to tell you that cows are killed for dairy, and forced to produce more milk in bad conditions than they naturally should be. Let’s just do our bodies, and the cows a favour by making good choices and opting for a plant-based alternative like these yummy dessert bars treats for the summer!
